As the former Yugoslavia broke apart, conflict erupted between the three main ethnic groups – Serbs, Croats, and Muslims. When Bosnia declared its independence, Slobodan Milosevic began to systematically orchestra attacks targeting the Muslim majority. The Serbs systematically rounded up Muslim men and boys and deported them to concentration camps; mass murders were common and violence against women was seen throughout the genocide. Genocide Watch estimates that over 200,000 Muslim civilians were murdered and 2,000,000 others were displaced during the violence.
